วันผังเมืองโลก (World Town Planning Day) ก่อตั้งขึ้นในปี พ.ศ. 2492 (ค.ศ. 1949) โดย ศาสตราจารย์ คาร์ลอส มาเรีย เดลลาฟา (Carlos Maria della Paolera) ผู้เป็นนักวางผังเมืองและนักการศึกษาชาวอาร์เจนตินา จุดประสงค์หลักของเขาคือการสร้างความตระหนักรู้ถึงความสำคัญของการวางผังเมืองในระดับโลก และการส่งเสริมให้วิชาชีพด้านนี้มีบทบาทสำคัญต่อการพัฒนาเมืองและคุณภาพชีวิตของประชาชน
